Starting School

At Market Weighton Infant School, we recognise that starting school is an important step in your child’s life. Your child will be taking their first steps into the world of education and first impressions count. We want to ensure that they have the very best start to prepare them for the future and to become life-long learners.

The school admits all children in the September of the school year when they reach 5 years of age. Arrangements for admission to our school should be made directly through the School Admissions Team, County Hall, Beverley, HU17 9BA . You will need to apply online or use the paper application. The application window for primary school admissions is open between September until mid January. If you have missed this deadline or require a paper application, contact School Admissions direct on 01482 887700 and ask for School Admissions.

In September, after a short two week phased entry to school, we offer a full-time place to all children. However, if you feel that your child is not ready for a full time place, we try to accommodate individual requests for a more flexible arrangement.

The maximum number for admission is 76. However due to local demand and popularity, the actual intake number often exceeds this. If you are worried about whether your child will get a school place with us, please contact us on 01430 873159.

Starting School this September

If your child is starting school this September (ie. will be 4 years old by 31st July), a number of events are arranged to help them to look forward to starting school and to get them used to their big step.

Home Visit

Your child’s teacher and/or support staff will visit you and your child at home prior to starting school (usually in June). This helps everyone to get to know each other. Ask us any questions and tell us about your child. It will be an opportunity for your child’s teacher to get to know your child- likes and dislikes and what they can do already etc.

Playgroup visits

The local playgroups hold some of their sessions with us so that the children can get to know their new school with their familiar people. Staff visit the pre-schools to meet the children and share information about them to help organise the children into their classes. Teachers also visit the nurseries to meet their children and to read them a story.

Stay and Play

This is when we invite all the new children to spend some time with us as a class in school to experience their new surroundings and to meet their teachers and classmates in June or July. We encourage parents to leave their child with us because otherwise it would be too crowded. However if you feel your child really needs you, then you are welcome to stay.We want the experience to be happy!

Parents Meeting

We hold an evening meeting for parents in June. This provides you with the opportunity to buy uniform, meet the staff, ask questions and to find out about us. You will be able to look around the school.

Concert Invitation

New parents and children will be invited to a school concert in July performed by our wonderful Year 2 children. This will be your children in a few years time!

Family Dinner Day

You will be invited to come and experience a school lunch with your child in June or July.. Hope it brings back happy memories!
